Justification for IT Tools Selected

During the delivery of the lesson on Contracts at Bishop Anstey High School, I integrated multiple technology tools to create an interactive, discovery-driven, and culturally engaging learning experience.
The two primary forms of technology used were:

1)    QR codes
2)    Mentimeter (word selection)
(Additionally, Music Integration)

1. Technology Tool - QR Code

QR codes were used at the beginning of the lesson to provide students immediate access to a real-world newspaper article related to the Spirit Mas Carnival partnership. This strategic use of technology justified itself by supporting the lesson’s focus on contracts in a modern business context. This use of technology promoted student autonomy, critical thinking, and real-world application, all key principles of progressivism, which emphasizes learning through authentic, meaningful experiences. It allows students to engage with material at their own pace, while supporting differentiated learning needs in the classroom.

Additionally, QR codes provided a modern alternative to traditional printed resources, encouraging students to interact with digital information in ways that reflect real-world business practices. Businesses today use QR codes for transactions, contracts, marketing, and customer engagement, making this activity highly relevant to the evolving digital landscape. It also sparked students’ thinking about how QR codes can be used beyond social media, encouraging them to consider future business ventures where technology can support innovation, problem-solving, and new opportunities.

2. Technology Tool - Mentimeter

Mentimeter was utilized to facilitate an interactive Word Selection Challenge, where students identified keywords essential to the definition of a contract. This tool allowed students to submit responses anonymously, promoting equitable participation from all learners, including those who might be shy. The live word cloud visualized collective student thinking immediately, supporting class discussion and deeper analysis. Rooted in Vygotsky’s theory of social constructivism, this strategy enhanced collaborative learning, encouraged peer dialogue, and enabled students to critically think and evaluate. These are some reasons why I chose to use the mentimeter tool.

3. Additional Technology - Music Integration

To create an ice breaker and enhance emotional engagement, I incorporated music into the set induction phase. The Mission Impossible theme tune was played as students embarked on their "Business Detective" mission, setting an exciting tone. After students correctly identified the topic of the day, Bunji Garlin’s "Carnival Contract" song was introduced to build cultural relevance, spark curiosity, and connect the heavy business concept of contracts to students’ real-life experiences.

Impact of Using Different Technology Tools

The combination of QR codes, Mentimeter, and Music Integration transformed what could have been a heavy theory-based topic into an engaging, student-centered, and culturally meaningful experience.

The technology tools were carefully selected to match the pedagogical approach (discovery and collaborative learning), the age and level of the students, and the nature of the topic. Contracts, as a theory-heavy area, demanded interactive, relatable methods to sustain interest and promote understanding which was accomplished with the use of technology.

Using the wrong technology could have disengaged students and weakened the lesson’s impact. Therefore, choosing appropriate technology was essential to ensure that it supported not distracted from learning.

By aligning the tools with the students' needs and lesson objectives, the integration of technology enabled independent exploration, peer collaboration, emotional engagement, and critical thinking, achieving both the cognitive and affective goals of the lesson.
